One of the most notable of the inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year is Roxy Music, the pioneering s art-rock band. We aptly begin with the leadoff track to their debut eponymous album — a clanking rush with discordant vocals, discordant sax, discordant guitars, discordant everything. The music here is plainly descended from the Velvet Underground, from the primitive chug of the production to the drone-y and distant vocals, but Ferry had bigger things in mind. Odd for the time, the title had no relation to the actual song, which has something to do with seeing a woman in a car. It was the time of the origins of glam T. Rex and Bowie were on the prowl in the U. Roxy bridged those worlds — the band was hailed as the progressive rock act of the year by some magazines — but was interested in others as well, and had a sound that ranged from the elemental it was arguably proto-punk to the full-on freakout. Roxy were not virtuosos — anyone could hear that. But they did have haut pretensions, which stood there baldly amid their almost vulgar subject-matter.

Although the band took a break from group activities in and again in , they reunited for a concert tour in , and toured together intermittently over the next few years. Ferry frequently enlisted band members as session musicians for his solo releases. Roxy Music became a successful act in Europe and Australia during the s. This success began with their self-titled debut album in The group also distinguished their visual and musical sophistication through a preoccupation with glamorous fashions. Rolling Stone ranked Roxy Music No. Roxy Music played a series of 40th anniversary shows in , but has since become inactive as a performing entity.
With startling, boundless creativity, Roxy Music's juiced-up debut record put a subversive spin on mid-'70s conventions, embracing glam-pop and artsy electronics while harboring a deep love of classic rock songcraft. Bryan Ferry's nightclub glamour-boy persona and wandering vibratos help make timeless epics out of molehills like the originally non-album track "Virginia Plain. It is nevertheless essential listening for all who care about boundary-defining rock, as well as the possibilities for profound innovation and redefinition that artists like David Bowie, T. Rex, and the New York Dolls promised, but never quite delivered. Would you like to tell us about a lower price?
